ALASKA ACTING CAMPS & CLASSES

Camps and classes for Alaska kids, teens, and adults that have a special focus on acting in the theatre. Many of these Alaska acting education programs also focus on singing, dancing and music. Most programs present a performance on the last day of classes. Most of the camps are day camps, but some are residential.

Contact each individual organization via their website for updated program date, place, and registration information.

Alaska Theatre of Youth
Anchorage, AK

ATY's goal is to offer professional education from local and out-of-state artists.

ATY is committed to empowering young artists and giving them the tools they need to succeed both in our productions and in the wider Anchorage theatre community.

Our teaching model has students take 4 classes in each level before progression to the next. For example: to join Improv 2, students will be asked to take 4 sessions of Improv 1 or have equivalent experience from other institutions. These classes do not need to be taken concurrently to count towards a students' progression.

This model will give instructors more time to teach fundamentals and build our students’ skills as a group, resulting in a more thorough and holistic arts education. Our dream with this tiered class system is to grow with our students, and one day culminate our 4 levels with Alaska Theatre of Youth Troupes, which will have the opportunity to study within their advanced subjects and perform in more challenging shows.

Theater Alaska
Juneau, AK

Theater Alaska introduces students to plays through participation in theater exercises and active discussion of themes and the theatrical artform. We are also bringing theater annually to all three high schools to ensure that students have the opportunity to see and interact with professional theater that represents them as individuals.

We are developing programs to introduce students to a broad range of writers, including Alaskan Native playwrights. Additionally, each year students at JDHS and TMHS study classic plays.

Theater Alaska is working to provide annual support to teachers to make the teaching of theatrical scripts active and empowering to students. Theater exercises get students on their feet and into their bodies to effectively communicate their ideas as individuals and within groups.

This work is made possible through funding from the Artful Teaching project administered by Juneau Arts and Humanities Council and supported by Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies.
