South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts
Greenville, SC area

The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities gives young emerging artists the opportunity to explore and refine their talents in a one-of-a-kind, arts-centered community.

As a state-funded, public, residential high school, serving sophomores, juniors, and seniors, the Governor's School gives artistically talented students from across the state the opportunity to receive pre-professional training in Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Music, and Visual Arts.

The tuition-free, nine-month program is modeled after a master-apprentice community with arts faculty who are all practicing artists, as well as educators in their areas of expertise.

The Governor's School's summer programs offer younger students the opportunity to immerse themselves in their artistic passion while also receiving the same caliber of training as the high school program, but in a shorter period of time.

Programs serve students in grades 6-11, and range from 1-5 weeks long, depending on art area and grade level.
South Carolina residency is required to apply for all programs, with the exception of Summer Dance.

South Carolina Children's Theatre
Greenville, SC area

CLASSES, CAMPS, AND WORKSHOPS
Our Education Department’s mission is to leverage theatre education as a tool to enhance students’ social-emotional skills, such as problem-solving, leadership, communication, self-control, emotional management, and more.

A student enters classes appropriate to his/her grade level and interest (Exploration, Story Drama, Process, Improv, Tech or Musical Theatre). For most students one hour of class per week is plenty. They begin to understand performance, ensemble and analysis as it relates to theatre arts. As they learn and hone skills, they will be given more to do on their own.

Beginning classes are geared for fun at all grade levels, but the student will be given tasks for which s/he is responsible–memorizing a part, rehearsing a mime skit, preparing basic character work. Individual outside work makes class time more productive and fun for the whole class.

Younger students who continue to be interested in drama will continue to take Exploration or Process classes (for at least a year and then may progress to 3rd Stage, Specialty or Intermediate level classes (again for at least a year). Classes should not be hurried through. Performance skills take time to develop. Sometimes theatre “games” are used in more than one class, but the student will be gaining skills that make the games different every time they are played. The instructor is the best judge of developmental stages, and if a student is not being challenged, the instructor will be the first to suggest a class shift. It is difficult at this level for a student to understand what s/he doesn’t know.

Before moving into an Intermediate level class students should be able to: name the parts of the stage, use abbreviations for stage directions and blocking notation, be able to define basic theatrical terms, understand CROoWw, be familiar with Lessac energies and Laban qualities as well as wanting to be given more responsibilities/homework and be willing to repeat material weekly for rehearsal and complete reading assignments in a week.

Bluffton Academy of the Arts
Bluffton, SC area

The Bluffton Academy of the Arts (BAA) is a school created just for performing arts students and their families seeking to combine online academics with their performing arts education. BAA students spend more time on their arts focus while also maintaining a high-quality, educator-supported academic schedule. With options for dancers and a musical theater program, BAA is the school where artists take their training to the next level.

BAA’s conservatory-style Program gives students in middle and high school the ability to combine arts training with the online school program of their choice, all within our safe and caring studio environment. Students attend BAA Tuesday – Thursday with the assistance of onsite educators and administrators, leaving the long weekends free for more training, travel or academic schoolwork. For artists training at a high level, meeting brick and mortar school requirements such as seat time or set exam dates can lead to increased stress and nights without enough rest. This program provides the flexibility of online schooling, while offering parents peace of mind and the ability to still work outside the home. Academic time includes quiet, individual working blocks as well as opportunities for enrichment and group collaboration.

BAA’s musical theater program will incorporate vocal, drama and musical theater dance training. Emphasis is placed on the safe development of our students’ vocal chords to allow for a lasting career in the industry.

Our Musical Theater students receive both private and ensemble vocal lessons and music theory instruction, incorporating sightreading, keyboarding and more. Weekly rotating classes include classes such as drama skills, Pilates and dance training. Dedicated practice hours are built into the weekly curriculum. BAA Musical Theater students can also explore songwriting as an extension of their vocal and piano training.

Just like our Dance students, Musical Theater students will benefit from our condensed school schedule, allowing them to travel for master classes or better prepare for and rest after outside theater performances.
